Roanoke Star Soccer Club is delighted to announce the line up of coaches for the 2008-09 season. This year we feel we have improved our coaching staff to new levels of excellence and are extremely excited to have several new faces as well as plenty of established coaches, to complete our staff line up.

Roanoke Star Soccer Club can and will form extra teams based on needs. We anticipate that we will have additional teams at the 14 Girls, 15 Boys, 16 Boys and 17 Boys. If numbers at tryouts dictate we will be able to form extra teams at other age groups. We will not attempt to form a team unless the numbers dictate that we already have enough players in place.
Whilst this list of coaches is final right now, there can and most probably will, be changes to the coaching line up.
Coach Bios
Greg Esposito
- NSCAA Regional Diploma, former player at Washington and Lee University, has coached youth soccer for 7 years and is terrific with younger ages and teaching technical skills. His experience as a player has helped him pass on his knowledge to the young players under his charge. Greg currently coaches the 11 Boys Elite team.
John Faircloth - John holds a NSCAA State Diploma, National Diploma, and Goalkeeping I, II, and III Diplomas. He received his NSCAA Advanced National Diploma in June of 2004 and completed his Premier Diploma and Director of Coaching Diploma in the summer of 2006. Formerly the Head Soccer Coach at Ferrum College where the program underwent a huge transformation that was recognized by the National Collegiate Athletic Association who listed the college as the most improved team in the nation under his leadership. Ferrum finished the 2005 campaign with a 13-7 overall record. The improvement was officially recognized by the NCAA as an 11-game turnaround. John will be coaching the 18 Boys Elite team.
John White - John has been a Roanoke Star Coach since 1994. He is currently also the Roanoke College Men’s Assistant Coach, a position he has held for the past 4 years. His other qualifications include: Virginia ODP District and State Coach 98- 07, USSF "A" License, USSF Youth National License, NSCAA Premier Diploma, NSCAA Goalkeeper Diploma (Level 1, 2 & 3), NSCAA Youth Nation Diploma, KNVB Academy Course “Coaching Youth Football” Certificate, Virginia Metro-DC Coaching Education Staff, and NSCAA Associate Staff Instructor. Played for Radford University 78-81, All-State Goalkeeper 80, 81, Inducted into the Radford University Hall of Fame 2001. John will be coaching the 15 Boys Elite team in 2008-09.
Marijan Grigic – Marijan has his NSCAA Advanced National Diploma from the NSCAA and has recently been coaching in our Academy Program. He hails from Croatia and has been involved in soccer at various levels most of his life. Marijan has great knowledge of the game and will be the Head Coach of the 12 Boys Premier team.
Brook Holley - Brook played College Soccer as a Goalkeeper for NC State from 1980-1984. Brooke is a new addition to the staff and has coached youth and travel soccer for 11 years. He holds his USSF "D" license. Coach Brook will be working as a Head Coach of one of our Premier teams in 2008-09.
Will Krause - Will is a former Soccer player at Virginia Tech. He also played in the club for over 10 years and is well known in the local community. He holds his NSCAA National Diploma. Will has a great personality and is a great teacher who is comfortable teaching children of all ages. Coach Krause will be the Assistant Coach of the 15 boys premier team in 2008-09.
Lars Agren – Lars holds his UEFA "B" license, the Swedish FA Badge, NSCAA Advanced Regional Diploma and NSCAA Goalkeeping Level I. He is the former Hollins College Head Soccer Coach. In addition Lars is a licensed conditioning coach and is in charge of the Roanoke Star Strength and Conditioning program. Lars will work with one of our Premier teams in 2008-09.
Alan Crowder – Alan enters his third season with Roanoke Star and is an extremely enthusiastic young coach. Alan has previously worked with our younger girls' team and did a great job developing the technical and tactical aspects of their game. He holds the National Diploma from NSCAA. He is also the Assistant Boys Soccer Coach with Salem High School. Alan will be the Head Coach of the 11 Boys Elite team.
JD Carlin – JD holds his NSCAA Advanced National Diploma, his USSF "C" License and the English FA Psychology Level I course. He has been coaching youth soccer for over 10 years and is well known throughout the community. JD is a very organized coach and is also a qualified referee. JD will be the Head Coach of the 12 Girls Elite team this year.
Dean Jones – Dean holds the NSCAA Advanced National Diploma and has represented Roanoke Star at many levels including President of the club. He currently is the Head Boys Coach at Salem High School.
Ryan Hambright – Ryan is one of the bright young coaching prospects at Roanoke Star. Ryan has already stamped his personality on a few teams with the Star and is extremely well liked and respected by the players in the club. Ryan holds his NSCAA Advanced Regional Diploma and is a former College Soccer player with Ferrum College. Ryan will be working as the Head Coach of the 12 Boys Elite team this year.
Ernie Linn – Ernie has coached youth soccer for over 20 years and is well known and respected by current and former players. He holds the NSCAA Advanced Regional Diploma. Ernie will be the Head Coach of the 14 Boys Premier team.
Mark Meyer – Mark holds the USSF "C" License, the NSCAA Advanced Regional Diploma, and has completed NSCAA training in "Coaching In the Game" and "Functional Training" under Jeff Tipping, NSCAA Director of Coaching. Mark has also studied the game under some great coaches including Ralph Lundy and Bertile St.Clair, Trinidad and Tobago National Team Head Coach. He will be the Head Coach of the 18 Girls Elite team in 2008-09. Mark has coached the U14 team to two consecutive BRCL Championships including an undefeated season.
Landon Moore – Landon has coached youth soccer for 6 years and holds the NSCAA National Diploma and recently completed his USSF "D" license. Landon is currently the Assistant Girls Soccer Coach at Hollins University.
Brad Collins – Brad joined the coaching staff at Roanoke Star after completing a very successful college soccer career with Virginia Tech. Brad received the coaches’ award and MVP defensive player of the year at Virginia Tech his senior year. This year Coach Brad will be in charge of the 16 Boys Premier blue team and his players can look forward to a year filled with excitement and development!
Whitney Wright – Whitney has done a marvelous job this year and last with Patrick Henry as the Head Girls soccer coach. We are delighted to have Whitney on our staff and her enthusiasm and knowledge are a great asset to the club. Whitney has completed her NSCAA Regional Diploma. She will coach the 15 Girls Elite team.
Danny Beamer – Danny is the Executive Director at Roanoke Star Soccer Club. He is also an NSCAA National Staff Coach and the NSCAA Regional Technical Director for Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia and D.C. He also is an instructor for the NSCAA Director of Coaching Course. He holds the NSCAA Premier Diploma (distinguished pass), NSCAA Advanced National Diploma, NSCAA Youth Diploma and the USSF "C" License. Danny has coached many players who have gone on to play at the highest levels in the game including players who have played for Arsenal and top 20 college teams. Danny will be the Head Coach for the 17 Boys Elite teams.
Graham Maclean – Graham is the Director of Coaching for Roanoke Star Soccer Club. He holds the USSF "A" License, the NSCAA Director of Coaching Diploma, NSCAA Premier Diploma (distinguished pass) and the Scottish Football Association "E", "D", and "C" Licenses. He has also attended coaching clinics and sessions at clubs such as Ajax Amsterdam and Excelsior FC in Holland and Glasgow Rangers in Scotland working with some of the best coaches in the world. Graham is the VYSA Western District Head Coach of the Olympic Development Program. He is also an NSCAA Associate Staff Coach and teaches courses in the local area. Graham will be the Head Coach of the 14 Boys and 14 Girls Elite teams in 2008-09.
Additional Staff
Ben Freakley – Ben is the Head Men’s College Soccer Coach at VMI and works with the Roanoke Star as the Skills Development Coach. He holds the NSCAA Premier Diploma (distinguished pass) and the USSF "A" License. He is also a NSCAA Associate Staff Coach and Region I USSF Staff Coach.
Cory Carroll - Cory is returning to Roanoke Star as the Head Coach of the 18 Boys Premier and 14 Girls Premier teams. An excellent coach, Cory is well liked and admired by the players he works with and does a great jog in helping teams reach their potential. Cory holds the NSCAA Advanced Regional Diploma and USSF "D" License.
Matt Neale - Matt joins the staff at Roanoke after some time coaching at Valley FC. He is a well respected coach who works well with the players. Matt holds his NSCAA Advanced Regional Diploma and will coach the 17 Boys Premier team in 2008-09.
Ally Baker - Ally has been a coach in the WAGS league in Washington DC and is a former college player at Bridgewater College. She is joining the staff at Roanoke Star this year and will be an excellent role model for our female players. She will work as the Head Coach of the 11 Girls Elite team.
John Siggins - Join is the former Director of Coaching at Goodview Galaxy. He is a great addition to the staff at Roanoke Star and will be working as the 13 Girls and 16 Boys Elite teams Head Coach. John takes great pride in his work and has a great way of communicating his ideas to his players. John holds the USSF "C" License and the NSCAA Advanced Regional Diploma.
Camilo Rodriguez - Coach Camilo joined the staff of Roanoke Star midway through the season last year and quickly showed what a quality addition he will be to the staff. He has tremendous experience in soccer, despite his youngish years! Time has been spent as a proffessional player in Columbia and the United States as well as more recently, an Assistant Coach with Charlotte Eagles.
Dave Sarmadi - Coach Dave is well known in the local community as the owner of Dave Sarmadi Mitsubishi in Salem. Dave was also a proffesional player in his native Iran and holds the USSF "D" License as well as the NSCAA Advanced Regional Diploma. He is a terrific coach who takes a real interest in the development of his players.
Glenn Hayman - Hayman is also the boy’s head soccer coach at Lord Botetourt High School and has just completed his 2nd season. Hayman was a four-year starter under Scott Allison at Roanoke College, where he was named All-ODAC during his junior and senior seasons. As a senior, Hayman was voted team captain in addition to earning All-South Region in 2003. He was a member of the back-to-back ODAC Champions (2001-02). Glenn will coach the 13 Boys Elite team in 2008-09.
Joe Nackley - Joe Nackley will be new to the staff this year at Roanoke Star. He is originally from the Charlottesville area where he coached in the SOCA organization. More recently, he has been working with the Botetourt Youth Soccer Association. We are delighted to have Joe on board and he will work as the Head Coach of one of our Premier teams this season.
