The Everton Way

Tosh of Everton
It's hard to imagine by looking at him that this guy is a soccer savant. As he steps to the center of the makeshift soccer field in the middle of the LA Convention Center, the public address announcer introduces him as Tony Farrell. But everyone in the building knows him simply as Tosh, the guru behind the Everton Way.

U14 Boys Win Everton Cup and take 3rd at Santa Cruz Breaker - Tuesday, August 11, 2009

U14 Boys Win Everton Cup and take 3rd at Santa Cruz Breakers

The U14 Everton boys won all four games to take the championship at our own tournament. It was a very hot weekend for the tournament, and the players got hot with scoring too. The Elk Grove Everton ’96 offense scored 17 goals in four games and its stingy defense gave up only one. August 1 and 2, the U14 boys competed in the Santa Cruz Breakers cup. Although the first game was played at 2:00, the boys didn’t seem to be quite awake yet and were defeated 4-1 by the eventual tournament champions, Marin FC ’96 Blue. Trailing 2-0 at the half, Everton scored early in the second half to get back in the game, but two unanswered goals later by Marin sealed their victory. Everton made it to the consolation game by beating Elite Barcelona and Ballistic Select 4-3 and 4-1 respectively. In the consolation game, they probably played their most complete game of the season when they took on the Santa Cruz Breakers. Everton scored in the first 20 seconds of the match and added three more goals before the first 10 minutes were over. By the end of the game, the Everton ’96 boys scored 8 goals for an 8-0 victory over a quality Santa Cruz Breakers side, which was good for 3rd place in the tournament.

U10 Girls Take Championship at Breaker's Cup

The U10 Girls team is on a roll. This is their 4th Championship out of 5 tournaments. The girls had 3 shutouts in flight play. They played strong against Jaws99 beating them 10-0. By second half, they were able to work on passing & moving the ball. It was amazing watching the way these girls moved the ball. The 2nd game was a win against Tri Valley Salsa 5 0. We again worked on ball movement & passing. Sunday we were able to take the flight with a 6-0 win against CV Crossfire Blue. The Championship game was against Tri Valley Samba. This was our 3rd match-up with them. Having beaten them twice before, we knew it would not be an easy game. They put more pressure on the girls, but in the end, we were able to take the game 4-1 with the last goal being a beautiful cross, headed in by Summer England. Just a great weekend all the way around. We are so proud of these girls.

The Everton U11 boys fought through a grueling weekend of 105+ heat to finish as Champions of the U11 boys division in the Elk Grove Everton Cup. The boys dominated the cup by outscoring their opponents with 22 goals for and 5 against. The championship final was a very evenly played match but the Everton boys persevered a muddy unmanicured pitch and a top 15 Norcal rated San Juan team to decisively beat their opponent 3 - 2!

The EGEFC U13G, win the Premier Division this past weekend in the Cal Cup tournament.  After maxing out points in bracket play Friday and Saturday, the girls came out on top in a hard fought battle with Placer Prestige Gold 1-0 in the semi-final. This set up a meeting with San Juan in the final. The Elk Grove side scored quickly and by halftime held a 4-0 advantage, which ultimately was the final score. Throughout the tournament, the spirited group from Elk Grove played hard and fast in the oppressive heat. Great passing and patience was seen throughout the tournament and culminated in many beautiful goals. The girls scored 24 times during the weekend and did not yield a single goal.

U11 Girls Cal Cup - Tuesday, June 30, 2009

Congrats to the U11 Girls!!

The heat wasn’t the only thing stifling at the 2009 California Cup. As temperatures reached 108 degrees, the Elk Grove Everton U11G girls were just as hot. Competing in a tough Premier bracket that included both teams from last years NorCal State Cup finals Elk Grove knew the road to the finals would be tough. The opening game of the tournament was a rematch of the 2008 NorCal State Cup semi finals in which Diablo FC, current Norcal State Cup Champions, beat Everton 3-2.  In the first rematch of these two teams,Everton’s passing and teamwork helped them defeat Diablo 2-0. Game two matched Everton against its region rival Placer United.  The first half of the game ended in a 0-0 tie. Then Everton exploded for three goals in the second half to secure a 3-0 victory.  The Sunday afternoon game paired Everton against San Ramon United. In a tough physical game Elk Grove prevailed 2-0.

The recipe for success was set. Everton’s smothering defense pitched a complete shut out in the first three games and the offense was sizzling scoring seven goals. This help set the table for the highly anticipated match with the 2008 NorCal State Cup finalist Ajax United Elite, Spring League Leaders. Parents, Coaches and spectators from other teams braved the heat to watch the battle between these two titans, and they were not disappointed.  Like a heavy weight bout the game went back and forth. Ajax scored first and then Everton responded with two of their own goals. Ajax then tied the game just before the half at 2-2. The team’s defensives then settled in and the game ended in a 2-2 tie with Everton advancing to the finals.

U11 Girls Take the Championship in Reno

U11 Girls Blue, Reno ChampsElk Grove Everton 99 Blue participated in the Reno Nevada Zephyr tournament this past weekend (June 13-14). They played up an age bracket and competed in the U11 division. Their first match up against the Carson Valley Sidewinders was a physical battle as the girls were out sized by the older players, but the Everton skill dominated the game and Everton came out victorious with a convincing 6-0 win. Their second game against the Spanish Springs Lady Jaguars ended in similar fashion with another convincing win of 6-0. The third game was a little bit more of a challenge but again the Everton girls dug deep and gave the competition all they had. They came out on top with a 3-1 win. The final game was against the Sierra Mountain TNT Galaxy. This team was also undefeated coming in to this final game with similar scores against the same teams. It was a physical battle, and although the Galaxy had the size, Everton had the skills.

After wins on Saturday over Eagles Blue of Ventura County 1-0 and Bay Oaks Botafogo 3-2, coupled with the outcomes of the other games in the bracket, a trip to Mondays Championship was assured. On the way to the championship, a slight stumble occurred Sunday as the girls from Elk Grove came up a bit short in a loss to ACC Mavericks 0-1.The championship game saw EGEFC facing Modesto AJAX. The teams had met twice recently, with EGEFC coming out on top both times (Central California Invitational championship game and State Cup Quarterfinals) in double overtime. Modesto was hungry for a win and good natured bantering from both teams took place throughout the weekend at the hotel where both sides were staying. The State Cup Semi-Finalists from Elk Grove, under the direction of Head Coach Cesar Plasencia and his assistant Chuck (Chet) Wallace again were again victorious, coming out extremely sharp and controlling the game in a 3-2 win.

Everton players impress in Nutrition Fuels Fitness 5K/10k RACE

On Sunday 3/29/09, four  Everton players, (Arica Souza U12 girls, Shawn Opfer, Ryan Hughes and Ryan Schubert all from U13 B) particiapted in the Nutrition Fuels Fitness race held at Elk Grove Park.  They all saw it as an opportunity to get some fitness in over the weekend but were impressive in their wins in two different categories.  Arica came in second in the under 12 category for the 5K (3 miles or so) while Shawn Opfer won the under 12 10K (about 6.2 miles) follwed by Ryan Hughes in second.  Ryan Schubert finished out of the medals but showed a strong finish.  The race promoted nutrition and fitness as a means to healthy living and clearly with the results that these four players had, they are all fine examples of this. We hope to see these players and everyone in the club attend our own Fun Run to be held in September.

Good of the Game

U9 State Cup Champion

The Elk Grove Everton FC 2000 U9 Girls took the top prize Sunday winning the NORCAL State Cup in the Premier Division. It was not easy. They played a very tough team from Santa Clara that refused to give up. Midway through the first half Everton got the all-important first goal and the sidelines erupted like Mt. St. Helens! The teams battled back and forth the remainder of the half with several good shots just missing the mark for both teams. The second half got off to a great start when Everton scored again six minutes in giving them a little breathing room. It didn’t last for long…Santa Clara came right back with a beautiful thru-ball just two minutes later and pulled within one with a rocket to the back of the net. Both teams turned on the afterburners and played like demons, but Everton’s outstanding defense and ball control took the measure of Santa Clara and denied them any further goals. Final score…2-1

Everton U13 Boys Win Las Vegas Soccer Tournament

The Elk Grove Everton U13 boys took 1st place in the U13 division at the Las Vegas Mayor's Cup Soccer Tournament the weekend of October 25 to 26.  By defeating teams from Las Vegas, Nevada and western Arizona, the Everton boys came in first in their group and earned the right to play the CVC Stars '96 Black from Arizona in a semi final match.  With the score tied at one at the end of regulation, the semi final game was decided by penalty kicks.  Elk Grove Everton came out on top in penalty kicks and made it to the final match against the other semi final winner, Arizona Nike Rush.  Early in the first half, Everton scored two quick goals and ended up soundly defeating the Arizona Nike Rush Team by a score of 5 to 2 for the championship.  The Mayor's Cup, a division 1 soccer tournament, was a total team effort in which every player contributed to win the championship

ID2

Congratulations to Tyler Rians (U12 boys) and Kira Wagoner (U14 girls) who recently returned from the Regional Training Center in Carson California where they attend the US Club id2 program. As an invitation only camp, the id2 program draws the top players from the nation for competition, fun and evaluation for possible inclusion in the National Team Program. As part of the program, Tyler and Kira were scouted locally while playing in both league and tournament play over the last year. They enjoyed 4 days of training and competition that emphasized 1v1, 2v2 and small sided games to goal.

They along with the other participants and their family’s received a tour of the Home Depot Center and later got to watch an LA Galaxy game.
All in all it was an experience they will never forget and will be a building block for their future success in soccer. Well done Tyler and Kira, you represented EGEFC well.
