GAME-2:  Crossfire Premier vs. San Juan:
This was a day which belonged to the elements:  heavy winds, downpours  and moments of extreme heat. Both defenses showed strongly, and the  conditions added to the challenge. Although pressing hard for the winning goal in the second half, SJ missed two crucial opportunities to seal the victory and had to settle for the a draw and Final Score:  SJ 0, Crossfire 0.

GAME-1:  San Juan vs. Colorado Rush
Regionals began with an old-fashioned shoot out!  SJ got on the board  first as a penalty kick was awarded in the first five minutes.  The  Rush came roaring back with 2 goals of their own.  With less then a minute to go until half, SJ was able to score the equalizing goal,  making it 2-2 at the half.  The second half belonged solely to San Juan, as two more goals were added and the Rush's best chance to score was thwarted on a good penalty kick save.  Final Score:  SJ 4, Rush 2.

Lightning '97 Blue Win Big @ Rouge Cup in Oregon

(Posted: June 17, 2008)  The San Juan Lightning ’97 Blue team opened their tournament season with a convincing win in the Rogue Valley Cup in Medford, Oregon, over the Memorial Day weekend.  The team swept all five games by a combined score of 23-5, featuring a balanced attack in which eight players scored goals.  Luis Chavez and Jesse Hopp paced the scoring with seven and six goals respectively.  DJ Villegas scored four, Noah Phillips had two, and Omar Rivera, Dylan Klein, Patrick Moher and Erick Ortiz each had one goal.  Six players had at least one assist, including Hopp (4), Rivera (3), Chavez, Javier Nieves, Justin Long and Emmett Barnes (1 each).

San Juan’s defense was also very strong.  Jared Heffner, Brenton Hack, Owen Brower-Douglas, Barnes, Long and Ortiz anchored a back line that was rarely beaten.  Keeper Nieves was strong throughout, as was backup keeper Klein.  The midfield was dominated Moher, Rivera, Klein, Long, Phillips and Chavez, while Hopp, Villegas, Zachary Dedrick kept constant pressure up front.  With half of its players new to the San Juan Club, the tournament was a great opportunity for the team to work on their passing, positioning and communication.    G o    L i g h t n i n g ! !

From the ESPN web site:
"Practice is over, his teammates are gone, but there is Chris Wright alone on the field running sprints.
There is Wright, firing shots into an empty net, over and over again. There is Wright, juggling the ball, maneuvering it on the grass, developing his touch. Wright, a University of New Mexico striker, has always worked hard on his game. The truth is..."

Chris's former SJSC Coach Ruben Mora also adds "He's also older brother to Steven Wright from our U14 Lightning Blue team, and Phil Wright, one of the founding fathers of San Juan Soccer Club.
It's a great story to share with the boys so they can see what hard work can do."

 Spirits '93 Make NO Excuses
(Posted June 2, 2008)
Sporting their San Juan Spirits training shirts, the Spirits '93-Blue ran in the Buzz Oates' "NoExcuses 5k Run" in Sacramento’s downtown Land Park area on Memorial Day.  This was the third 5K race the team ran in the month of May.  Their first run was the Susan B. Komen Race for the Cure, where they ran with the Spirits '98; and the following week the team ran in Folsom's Run With Nature.

Coach John Demartini encourages the runs as a way of keeping his team fit, building team camaraderie and supporting good causes. As John likes to say: "running is good for the soul."

Their next scheduled runs will be the Sacramento Cowtown 1/2 Marathon in October and the Apple Hill Harvest Run in November.

Lightning 94 White - Win Tracy FC Orange Bowl on 5/24
(Posted May 31 2008) On May 23rd and 24th, the San Juan U14 Boys Lightning White inaugurated their 2008 season with championship hardware at the Inaugural Tracy Futbol FC “Orange Bowl.”  The Memorial Day weekend was played on some of the finest grass fields in the state.

Championship:  Santa Rosa vs. SJL94W - 0:2
The championship game turned out to be San Juan’s best passing game of the tournament.  Although San Juan peppered Santa Rosa’s goal, it appeared that the championship might be decided by PKs.  With 7 minutes left, Austin Wiberg found Keith Scott with a nice lead pass 20 yards out to the right of the goal.  Scott brought the ball under control and enticed the keeper to commit; he popped it over the keeper and into the left side netting to separate San Juan from Santa Rosa by a goal.  Santa Rosa tried valiantly to tie the game.  Leo Luna blocked a fierce Santa Rosa shot.  With the ball bouncing just 2 yds from the goal, Alex Lettington saved the day by beating a Santa Rosa attacker to clear the ball up the field.  After several more close opportunities by San Juan, Wiberg put in the game closer with 1 minute left.  San Juan had 14 shots on goal to Santa Rosa’s 2.  Overall, a tremendous job by the defense - permitting just 12 shots and 1 goal in 4 games.  Shoring up the defense were Leo Luna, Alex Lettington, Daniel Manfred, Christian Ramirez, and Connor Galvin (guest).

More game details coming in the upcoming June Club Newsletter.
