Haverford Fury VS Nether Providence Blackhawks

 

Today was the first game of the Fall season for the Fury as they had a rainout last week.  The Fury  were coming off of a tournament championship in Ridley with a new deployment of 4-4-2 .  With additions to the team Danny Lyons (HSC Dragons), Cole Mays (HSC Highlanders) and Seth Berger (HSC Tigers), this new deployment would take full advantage of their skills and team playing abilities.

Nether Province was coming of a difficult season at usclubs division 1 where they finished 5^th of 6 teams.  The Fury had moved up to what would have been usclubs division 2 and now both teams were playing in the newly formed epysa division 3. 

The Fury wasted no time drawing first blood just 1 minute into the match as Thomas Leonard fed a pass to Danny Lyons for the first goal.  The teams rallied for the next 19 minutes with the Blackhawks unable to break through the Fury defense more than  1 time to make the score 1-1 .  Then, at the 20 minute mark Davis Kurdyla found Danny Lyons open on the far post and delivered a wonderful cross for Danny to put in the net 2-1 Fury.  Just 12 minutes passed when Danny Lyons again found himself in perfect position to receive a pass from Thomas Leonard to make the score 3-1 Fury.  At this point the coaching staff was wondering what the heck was going on…was it possible that last year’s division 3 leader could topple last years division 1  team from Nether Providence…keep reading.  With less than 3 minutes left in the first half, again Thomas Leonard would assist his teammate by placing a perfect slot pass to Thomas Lovelace who would deftly dribble around the diving keeper and calmly place the ball in the onion bag.

At the end of the first half the score was 4-1 Fury.  Halftime meant slight changes to the lineup to bolster the defense and give the midfielders the much needed break.    Connor Gallager, Davis Kurdyla, Cole Mays, Thomas Leonard and Berkely Melvin had been running hard all day with unrelenting challenges to the ball and all the tenacity of a bunch of pit bulls.  The Defense was as strong as ever with Nathan Donley, Mark Sammartino, Aiden Barber, Matt Buzzell and the team’s newest member Seth “wheels” Berger.   It is no secret that this defense has always been the backbone of the team commanded by netminder Jakey “Bring It!” Weisman.   But  in the second half of this game sweeper Mark Sammartino would prove to be a key offensive weapon as well as a strong sweeper.  With Nathan Donley backing him up, Sammartino was put in charge of throw ins and powerfully threw the ball well behind the Nether back line to create multiple scoring opportunities for forwards Lovelace, Egelkamp, Lyons and Leonard.  The long throws paid off and after 32 minutes Aiden Barber put another goal on the scoreboard  unassisted while the Fury Wall held the Blackhawks to only 1 additional goal in the entire 2^nd half.

Come cheer on your Fury as they play in a rematch of their Ridley Victory against the visiting TE Warriors at the Haverford Reserve Turf field tomorrow (Sunday September 20^th) at 2:30.  This will the Warriors First Game of the season and the Fury’s First game on the new turf field.

Location: Embreeville Complex, West Chester PA

The U13 Boys Haverford Fury visited Brandywine Arsenal on their home field at the Embryville Complex in West Chester in an EPYSA D3 match.  Throughout the first half the Fury maintained constant pressure and controlled play to the tune of 5 unanswered goals.  The second half of the game was an uphill battle for the Fury (literally) as the Arsenal managed to put 3 unanswered goals past the Fury Defense.

Working to hold their ground and fuel the offense, the Fury defense turned away Arsenal forwards time and time again throughout the game thanks to defenders Nathan Donley, Matt Buzzell, Shane Cummings, Aiden Barber, Mark Sammartino while under the command of netminder Jake Weisman.

The midfield was was a pressure-cooker as the Fury never stopped pressuring their worthy opponents.  Extreme hustle in the midfield on the part of Connor Gallagher, Berkeley Melvin, Cole Mays, Davis Kurdyla and Seth Berger ensured a smooth and rapid transition of play from defense to forwards.  Forwards Thomas Lovelace and Noah Egelkamp had their hands full as they continually peppered the Arsenal keeper with well placed shots and maintained pressure on the Arsenal defenders.
 
Goals were scored by Thomas Lovelace, Connor Gallagher, Noah Egelkamp (2) and Avery Weiss.  Assists were provided by Thomas Lovelace and Davis Kurdyla, Connor Gallagher's Goal was unassisted.

Tomorrow October 4th the Fury travel to the Greater Chester Valley Soccer Association to play the second of their weekend doubleheader.  GO FURY!

Dateline Saturday October 24, Preston Field, Havertown PA

The Haverford Soccer Club's u13 Boys team, The Fury played Ridley United's Strikers on a wet, muddy Saturday afternoon on Preston  Field in Havertown.  The Fury and the Strikers have played together the last couple of years and also in the spring as part of a 4 team invitiational league and it has always been a very friendly rivalry with both teams playing solid soccer and displaying excellent sportsmanship.  While the Strikers and the Fury tied in the latest Columbus day tournament, today, it was the Fury that came out on top with a score of 4 goals to 1.  Neither of the teams had substitute players available due to illness.  The Strikers were first to get on the board with a goal early in the first half.  This goal sparked the Fury into action as they delivered 4 unanswered goals.  Scoring first for the Fury was Noah Egelkamp off of a goal post rebound initiated by Thomas Leonard from about 25 yards out.  Goal #2 was scored by Seth Berger who took control of a skidding pass from Cole Mays and lofted the ball over the the Ridley keeper but just kisssed the underside of the crossbar on the way to the back of the net.  Goal #3 came from Dan Lyons off of a direct kick that cleared the Stiker's wall and dropped just below the crossbar.  Goal #4 was the result of a scramble in front of the Striker's goal mouth initiated by a perfectly placed slot pass from Seth Berger to Noah Egelkamp for the final goal of the game.  Excellent defensive work by keepers Danny Lyons and Thomas Leonard along with  fullbacks Nathan Donley, Shane Cummings, Mark Sammartino and Matthew Buzzell kept a tenacious Ridley team at bay.  Midfielders Seth Berger, Cole Mays and Berkeley Melvin spent the day supporting their defenders while providing offensive firepower through intense hustle and rock solid ball skills.  The offensive punch up front came from Fury canons Thomas Leonard, Danny Lyons, Thomas Lovelace and Noah Egelkamp.  The Fury have been battling 2 games/weekend for the last 5 weeks as well as playing in a higher division than last year but they have never once quit while improving with every game.  Today was a big win for the Fury as reward for all of their hard work and sacrifice.
