Athletic Inspiration

A quote that is posted in six lanquages in the locker room of the San Antonio Spurs reflects the team's mindset that their daily efforts in practice will yield results....
When nothing seems to help, I go look at a stonecutter hammering away at his rock perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundred and first blow it will split in two, and I know it was not that blow that did it, but all that had gone before.” — Jacob Riis

Fall 2009 Recap
The girls had a terrific fall season as they competed in Division 1 of PAGS. The Hurricane had 6 wins, 2 losses, and 1 draw. They finished in second place for the regular season and faced York Elite FC in the semi-finals. In what might have been the most exciting and tense games that the girls ever played, they lost 2-1 in a nailbiter which was decided penalty kicks after two scoreless overtimes.
The team is competing in the Hempfield Classic on Nov 21-22, then will go indoors for a few months as many of the girls are training at USTC Academy and honing their skills by playing futsal at Episcopal Academy and Indoor soccer at The Far Post.  They will compete in Indoor State Cup on February 6th. By then, spring will be just around the corner and the team will compete in Outdoor State Cup in March and April.

Spring & Summer 2009 Recap
It was a very busy spring and summer in 2009. In April and May, the team played very well in an informal spring league, playing 7 games against quality teams from the area.
In June, the team had a great weekend away at the Hershey Invitational. The team lost a close semifinal game to eventual tournament champion, the Hershey Bears.
Throughout the the summer,  the girls attended many soccer camps, including National Soccer Camp at Eastern University, Kevin Sloane Academy, and Penn Soccer School. The team spent a week of training at our team camp with Ian Shinton, our trainer from the NY Red Bull Training Program. Many of the girls also went away for a week of serious training and team bonding at the UK Elite residential team camp at the Church Farm School in Exton. A couple of our players also took a week of GK training with UK Elite and Red Bull.
There was also the Twin Valley Summer Classic, where the team placed 2nd out of 8 teams, losing a tough battle in the final to West Depford.
Unfortunately, the Spirit United Kick Off Classic was rained out, so the team will have continue to build their anticipation for competition as they work hard in practice leading up to the fall season opener on September 13th. It's Hurricane season, so just like the real thing, our Hurricane team should continue to gain speed and strength as the eye of the Hurricane rolls into the PAGS season!

Are We Almost Ready for Cleats on Grass?!?!?!?!
Spring is just around the corner!!! As we enter the final stretch of indoor training, leagues, and tournaments, the team is looking forward to returning to the the great outdoors on March 15th as the Brandywine Spring Travel League kicks off. The players will have a chance to test out the skills that they honed over the winter as they take on 7 top teams from the area on Sunday afternoons through mid-May. Some of the games will probably be played 11v11 as the teams prepare to step up to 11v11 in the fall.
Many of the players will also be playing in the HSC Intramural Spring League, which is fun and competitive with a mix of travel and recreational players.

The team is also looking forward to competing in the Hershey Invitational Tournament on the weekend of June 20th. The girls will play at least 3 games, as the excitement of soccer competition will be up against the fun of the water park and amusement park.

Hurricane Earn Champion Trophies in Southampton
The girls won three games in the Southampton November Classic to take the title for their age bracket. They battled the cold and tough competetion as they bested the Interboro Thunder, Warrington Flames, and the Yardley Thunder. The Hurricane looked sharp as they ended their fall season with a beautiful display of teamwork, solid passes, and constant communication.

Hurricane Finish PAGS Season Stong
The girls wound down their PAGS season with an impressive 1-1 tie at eventual division winner BUSC and came out even stronger the following week with a 4-0 victory at home against WCUSC. They battled tough competition throughout the fall to finish with a league record of 2 wins, 2 losses, and 5 ties. Their overall record was 12-3-5.

The team is looking ahead to a full menu of winter soccer opportunities. Many of the girls are participating in a 20 week training program which is run by PAGS trainers on Sunday mornings. A few are also training with UK Elite in a 7 week Thursday evening program. They will be playing in leagues at Starfinder in Manyunk in the Winter I session and then at Rocket Sports (YSC) in Winter II. They will also play in tournaments at YSC in January and Far Post in March. The team is also represented with a participant at training sessions at USTC Academy in Downingtown and two players are playing as guests with the U11A Heat at the Far Post.
For many of the girls, they love soccer so much, "there is no off season!!!"

Hurricane Win USJL Columbus Cup
The Haverford Hurricane (U10A girls) won four straight games this weekend to claim the champion trophies at the UJSL Columbus Cup tournament in NE Philadelphia. An offensive explosion led to 21 goals being scored by the Hurricane over the weekend as every team member either scored a goal or assisted on one. The real story was defense and possession as the girls held their opponents scoreless over the 4 games. The finals pitted the girls against a determined but overmatched Parkwood Inferno team, where the HSC squad emerged with a 7-0 victory. However, the third game of the weekend, against the Warrington Flames, was no walkover as the Hurricane battled to 1-0 victory. The lone goal was netted on a free kick by our stopper, who also anchored the defenser much of the weekend. The win was preserved by our GK who saved a penalty kick late in the game. The successful weekend brings the season record of the team to 8-2-2. They resume play this weekend against the BSA Rage in Berks County.

Hurricane take Second Place in Sprit United Tournament
The Hurricane team had a great weekend of soccer in Downingtown in late August. They won two games on Saturday and another on Sunday, giving the team a lead in the bracket going into the final game. The final game pitted the Hurricane against eventual tournament winner Hockessin Academy in a physical battle that left the Hurricane on the losing end of a 2-0 thriller. The Hurricane will have another chance as they will face Hockessin again in league play on October 25th. See the picture gallery on the left to see the team celebrate as they earned finalist trophies in the tournament.

HSC Hurricane Edges LMSC Wildcats in July Friendly
July 8, 2008  The HSC Hurricane, in their first scrimmage together, edged the LMSC Wildcats. It was a tight match throughout, with HSC hanging on to take a 4-2 victory thanks to a couple of spectacular saves by the Hurricane keepers. The athletic ability of the Hurricane squad was quite evident early on as they often recovered the ball at will from the Wildcats and often transitioned into quick strike counterattacks. There were also glimpses of the Hurricane's emerging foot skills as they attempted at times to pass the ball around with a purpose. Two of the Hurricane goals were long shots that hit the back of the net and one was a short shot after some skillful Hurricane dribbling faked out the LMSC keeper. Another goal was due a Hurricane wisely positioning herself at the far post as a shot was taken. The shot was a little wide but our player at the back post was there to poke it in and finish the job.
We hope to gauge our progress again in early August with another scrimmage. Planning is currently underway with prospective opponents.

The Hurricane Photo Gallery
As you can see, Noreen Farkas has added some terrific action photos to our gallery. Noreen will be taking photos, but if you take a photo of the Hurricane team in action and you would like to have it posted, you can email it to Noreen at farkasfamily@comcast.net. Thanks Noreen!
