2005 Women's Club Soccer National Champions
Dec 2, 2005
The University of Michigan women's soccer club earned its 3rd National Title in six years when it defeated Colorado State in overtime last week in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Five former Arsenal players are members of the Championship team: Bre Bennett, Caitlin Cicone, Michelle Cox, Dana Restrick, and Erika Schmit. The top 16 teams from across the nation are invited to participate in the Championship Division based on their season record in their Region (there are 6 regions) and how well they do in their Regional Tournament. UM finished first in both of their region events, going 16-0-1 in season and winning the Regional Tournament.
At Nationals there were 4 pools of 4 teams each in the Championship Bracket. UM went 2-1 in the pool (Delaware, UCLA, and Texas), taking 2nd place behind Texas (0-1, the only loss of season). In the crossover quarterfinal game, UM played Arizona and came away with a 2-1 win. They faced the University of Colorado in semis and went up by 1 goal before conceding a goal on a pk by the other team. 1-1 at the end of regulation took them to two 10-minute overtimes (sudden death) and still no winner. In shootouts, UM scored off its first 3 shooters while Bre Bennett shut out the first 3 for Colorado, taking UM into the finals. Finals play pitted UM against Colorado State who had beaten Texas 4-0 in semis. With 15 minutes left, Colorado State scored the first goal of the game putting Michigan in a desperate attempt to tie. With about 6 minutes left in regulation, a UM player was fouled at about 23 yards out and Michigan had a chance to equalize. Dana Restrick had the opportunity of a life time and seized the moment drilling her direct kick aorund the wall, off the post, and into the opposite net. Michigan got a great finish about 2 minutes into OT, and the University of Michigan got it's 3rd National Championship in 6 years.

Arsenal Player Wins Olympic Gold Medal in Australia!
January 17, 2005
Well, what can I say about Virginia Keeler? There she was at WideWorld just this past fall playing on our U16 girls' Arsenal team in a league match. And there she was scoring the US team's second goal in the Deaflympics final match vs Russia today in the 66th minute to give the USA a commanding 2-0 lead in the match, which the US team won 3-0 to take the gold medal. What a ride! Not only did Virginia tryout to make the US team this past summer, she then traveled first to the east coast and then to the west coach to train, she made the trip with the team to Australia, played in every match, and found herself the third leading scorer of the entire tournament with 7 goals!
Thomas will be interviewing Virginia in the upcoming few days to get her take on this amazing two weeks she spent in Melbourne and its surroundings and will report back to all of you at that time. Check out this link for the terrific article on her from Jim Carty of the AA News and also the following link to the US Soccer website for a story on the great win: http://www.ussoccer.com/news/fullstory.sps?inewsid=142912

2003 Bluegrass Invitionational Winners
The 12 GAP won the 2003 Bluegrass Invitational Tournament in Lexington, Kentucky. We tied Elizabethtown Flames 1-1, defeated Evansville Premier from Indiana 4-0, defeated Lexington Premier FC 2-0, and also Worthington United 10-0 in group play. We played the same Worthington United FC team in the final and beat them 2-0 behind 2 quality goals by Captain Rebecca Pidgeon. The team played very well all weekend after initially struggling on our finishing which can be attributed to a long 2 week layoff between games. In the final, Coach Jebson was particularly pleased with the strong performances by Amanda Maher-Baldouf, Jayel Lerch, Lisa Masini, Mikalia Dennis, and Rebecca Pidgeon. However, our defending was impressive and the best it has been all year with strong, solid defending by Claire Shea, Claire Phillips, Meredith Faas, Jayel Lerch, and Natalia Reed-Lopez - collectively know as "the wall". We only conceded one goal all weekend which can also be attributed to good goal keeping by Lolo Spraetz. This season the team has won the Bluegrass Invitational defeating #2 and #3 ranked teams in Kentucky, they also son the SuperClubs Regional in Memphis, Tennessee, and was the runner-up at the prestigious Javanon Cup losing to Nationally ranked JB Marine 2-1. The team is playing very well. We look forward to completing our MSPSP season with 4 tough opponents remaining.
