Season Ending injury Report 2008-2009

I have taken a look at the data from both fall and spring seasons for the last year.  The data suggests the type and number of injuries are relatively similar.  I did change the way the survey was worded so some of the data cannot be compared directly. The most important numbers to me ar    are the serious injuries.  The number of concussions was essentially the same – 8 in the fall, 9 in the spring.  Again, I believe this is a relatively small total number of players given the number of opportunities (games and practices).  That being said, I wo  uld love to reduce that as low as possible.  We will continue our education process regarding proper technique on the field and assessment off the field. There were considerably more fractures reported in the fall, 26 vs 10.  This may be due to the way the question was asked.  Hopefully with no changes to the  questionnaire this fall we will get more consistent numbers.  We did add a category for number of season ending injuries in the spring and it was 12.  No data were requested last fall.  Interestingly, the percentage that were able to return to play the same day was consistent at 40%.

The heat factor in the spring was non-issue as I would expect.  We will watch closely how the fall develops.  I will be working with the facility director for the new turf fields to see how that affects temperature on the field.  We will also keep close contact with the coaches to minimize the risk of heat related illness.  Our heat policy will remain in place as it was last season.

Finally, I hope to get even more participation in the survey going forward.  Please submit a response for any injury this fall.  If you have not done this, it only takes about 2 minutes.  Thanks again for your continued support.
