Spirits 94 White - Second Effort Leads to Winning Goal
The Spirits '94 White added another large W to their Fall League record, Saturday, November 22, by handily dispatching a super fast and motivated 49er United squad. Having been beat by the '94 White team earlier in the season, the '9ers came to the field ready to rumble. Nonetheless, the Blue team brought just too much offense and rock-solid D to allow any daylight for the Auburn team. Playing on the 49er's home field, in Auburn, CA, the intrepid '9ers showed an amazing amount of speed in all areas of the field. Caught off-guard after two Spirits goals in the first half, the 49ers sprang to life late in the second half with renewed intensity. Taking advantage of an unfortunate 1-player advantage, the 49ers were able to eek in their single goal with 10-minutes left in regulation. But, in the end it was too little, too late, as San Juan would not be denied. Lia (#24) pops the first notch with a ready foot off of a corner kick from Ashley S. Ashly S. (#8) then launches a beautiful arch from outside the 18 over the goalies head - an especially impressive tag from a mid-air bounce. On the defensive side of the field, Krista was brilliant as a stand-in goalie, with several critical stops. And, Dani's(#20) defensive prowess proved to be too much for even the referee, it would seem.

 Elite Clubs National League

(Posted 8/6/2009)
Frequently Asked Questions about the Elite Clubs National League

The following “frequently asked questions” are provided to give basic information about the ECNL, and are grouped into eight basic categories: (i) Background of the ECNL; (ii) Player Development in the ECNL; (iii) Competitive Structure of the ECNL; (iv) the ECNL Player Identification Program; (v) Collegiate Recruiting and the ECNL; (vi) the ECNL National Championship: (vii) Future Years of the ECNL; and (viii) Administration.

Background of the ECNL:

What is the Elite Clubs National League (the “ECNL”)?

The ECNL is a national youth soccer league founded in 2009 for U15, U16 and U17 girls for the purpose of providing the highest level of competition and the best developmental environment for American female youth soccer players, as well as an identification program for identifying players for US Soccer Youth National Teams. The 2009-2010 season is the ECNL’s inaugural season, during which each ECNL team will play 9 regular-season games and 2 post-season games.

Why was the ECNL founded?

The ECNL was founded by many of the best female youth soccer clubs throughout the country based on the belief that elite female player development in the United States needed a structure that would reduce the total number of games on the schedule and increase the number of meaningful, quality games. The ECNL sets forth a vision that provides a clear path to that goal: a national competition schedule and a national identification program linked to that competition, and an organization in which best practices in player development can be shared throughout the country.

Who plays in the ECNL?

In 2009-2010, the ECNL will consist of 40 of the best female youth soccer clubs from across the country. For a complete list of member clubs, please go to www.usclubsoccer.org or www.eliteclubsnationalleague.com. Each member club will have 1 team in the U15, U16, and U17 divisions of the ECNL.

Why should I play in the ECNL?

The ECNL was formed with one driving purpose: to improve the developmental environment for elite female soccer players. In order to accomplish this, the ECNL has several specific objectives: (i) increase the frequency with which the top players in the country have the opportunity to compete against each other; (ii) decrease the number of uncompetitive games for the top players in the country so that these players can train more frequently; (iii) increase the collegiate recruiting exposure for top players; and (iv) provide an alternative identification program for these players to be identified for US Soccer Youth National Teams.

Every member club of the ECNL is dedicated to accomplishing these objectives. By coming together into the ECNL, ECNL member clubs can help to make the changes necessary to accomplish these objectives far more quickly, efficiently, and effectively.

ARYSL AGM Meeting - Proposed Changes

(Posted 1/7/2009)
Dear San Juan Family, Friends and Coaches:
We need your help on Jan 11th at the ARYSL AGM.  The meeting will be held at 7:00pm at the following location:
   Orangevale Community Center

6826 Hazel Ave
    Orangevale, CA 95662

ARYSL is attempting to change the bylaws of the organization to eliminate the mandate that
San Juan enjoys as the competitive club of ARYSL. Here is a link to the ARYSL Agenda and proposed changes.   http://www.arsoccer.org/PDF/2009_arysl_agm.pdf

San Juan's board and its coaches are against these changes for the following reasons:
1) San Juan has existed for over 30 years with generally good working relationships, however due to a change in the hierarchy of ARYSL, the relationship has soured. This past year our club attempted many times to conduct clinics and coaches training sessions without cost. We thought that ARYSL would appreciate our attempts to build relationships and skills among the Recreational and Select coaches.  However, due to the personal agendas of several ARYSL board members, AYRSL has decided that rather than attempting to work with our organization for the benefit of all the players, they prefer to take a radical approach and change their bylaws in such a manner that we believe is to the detriment of the players. We do not feel that everyone on the ARYSL Board is aware of the personal agendas and our hope is that they too will vote with us to defeat these amendments. If we fail to work with our affiliate organization we will be subject to dismissal under these amendments.

2) ARYSL claims they want flexibility and more of a community based competitive program. Some on the ARYSL have expressed opposition to the open boundaries created when CYSA-N changed their By-Laws several years ago.
The newly relaxed boundary requirements allowany one to play where and for whom they want. The ARYSL’s attempt to impose new boundary restrictions violates, at a minimum, the spirit of that change. Out of 500 players, only 140 kids live outside the ARYSL boundaries.  However, 92% of the kids that tryout for our club from the ARSYL boundaries makes our teams.

3) The CYSA-N Bylaws were relaxed to prevent the exact change proposed by ARYSL.
If the recreation and select teams can modify the coaching curriculum, the hiring of specific coaches, and the location of the players, then they will likely lower the experience level well below our current coaching knowledge, experience and understanding of competitive soccer in the UnitedStates. ARYSL needs 2/3 of their members to effect this change.

4) ARYSL proposed changes could lead to an increase in the fees paid by the competitive players to the benefit of a much larger group, the recreational and select players, many of which can afford to pay for additional soccer support. Winning matches is not the sole purpose of our club, developing talented players who seek to play at the highest levels is our goal, but winning matches speaks volumes about out ability to develop players and the teams they play on. The mission of our coaches is to provide the kind of quality of competitive soccer that is to be equal to So. Cal. and the rest of the country. ARYSL disagrees with our mission and wants to change it to make it less competitive. If you want to see San Juan continue with its current mission these amendments should be defeated.

5) The language in these amendments threaten the independence of the very nature of our competitive club and leaves its direction subject to ARYSL dictates and those who have far less experience in the competitive arena. The rules that exist work and do not need to be changed so that personal agendas can be satisfied.

Despite the proposed changes, there is very good news.
While we would prefer to attempt to work out our disagreements with ARYSL and continue to as their competitive club, irrespective of the outcome of the proposed changes,  San Juan and its current mission will thrive as a competitive soccer club in the Sacramento Valley for years to come. Our attempts to establish permanent fields is nearing completion and our affiliation with USSF and US CLUB soccer provides for a very rich competitivearena.

We ask that you join us at the meeting and cast your vote against these amendments.

Thank You Joe Oddo (President SJSC) and members of the board

San Juan Lightning 2001 Blue Wins Placer United Invitational
(Posted 7/25/2009) On a blistering hot weekend, playing with no subs, the San Juan Lightning 2001 Blue team coached by Nate Gargiulo wins the Placer United Invitational!

The boys came out firing in the first game and beat Placer Black 12 to 0. Playing with tenacity and exhibiting some fine finishing it was a great start to the tournament.

The second game in the afternoon saw fatigue set in for some of the boys as they gave Davis a 2 to 0 lead and could never recover eventually losing 4 to 2.

Disappointed, but not out of of it, the boys responded the following morning by winning 3 to 0 against Cal Rush as their confidence was restored.

The win in the morning led to a rematch against Davis in the final. Both teams battled admirably and at the end of regular time the score was 2 to 2. The game went into two five minute overtimes and again the boys showed great courage by playing as a team even when exhaustion was settling in. The score remained 2 to 2 and the game went into penalty kicks.

Showing great focus the boys stepped up and made all of their shots and with some fine goal tending as well the San Juan Lightning 2001 Blue had won their first tournament together. Congratulations boys!

SJSC Named TOP 10 Girls Club in USA
(Posted 1/29/2008)
Big news for our Club...

Soccer America announced top 30 boys and girls youth soccer clubs in America for 2009.   San Juan Soccer
             Club has been ranked
#10 Girls Club in the nation!

FRISCO, Texas (January 28, 2009) – Today, Soccer America magazine named the 2009 Top 30 boys and girls youth soccer clubs in America.

Now in its sixth installment, Soccer America selected the top 30 boys and girls clubs, based on success of their teams in national youth competitions over the last three years and national recognition for players from these clubs in 2008.  The list was expanded from 20 to 25 in 2008 and again expanded from 25 to 30 this year.

The most important criteria for determining "America's Best Youth Clubs" was success in the US Youth Soccer National Championships during a three-year cycle (2006-2008), US Youth Soccer National League involvement and the number of players who went on to U.S. Soccer national teams and were selected to US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program All-Star rosters via the annual US Youth Soccer ODP Thanksgiving Interregionals.

"Congratulations to each of the clubs selected as 'America's Best Youth Clubs' by Soccer America," said Larry Monaco, president of US Youth Soccer. "It's wonderful to see that this publication continues to recognize the work of coaches, players and administrators. These clubs are honored for their dedication and efforts to the game. Their recognition provides us with another opportunity to be proud of how clubs, leagues, State Associations and national programs advance soccer to be 'The Game for All Kids'."

"Selecting America's best youth clubs has become very difficult because of the increasing quality we're seeing in all parts of the country and the range of playing opportunities available for players," said Paul Kennedy, Editor in Chief and General Manager of Soccer America. "We have expanded our rankings to 30 clubs in 2009. The most important criteria for our rankings is success in US Youth Soccer National Championships, which have also expanded to include additional top teams with the creation of the US Youth Soccer National League."

SPIRITS 96 WHITE ADVANCE IN STATE CUP

(Posted 1/29/2008)  For the second time in three years, the San Juan Spirits of  96 White have advanced to the Sweet 16 of State Cup.  Despite having only 13 available players  the girls secured their berth with three 1-0 wins at Fremont Central Park on January 17th & 18th.  All three games had the same theme with early second half goals by the Spirits in all three games.

Nikki Clark’s nearly impossible angle goal in the third minute of the second half propelled the Spirits past the Livermore Elite Fury in game one.   The goal was set-up by some nifty ball work and run by Mia Sapiandante.  Led by Marisa Rios and Katie Neighbor’s play in the midfield the Spirits were able to make the goal stand up.

Game two brought a challenge from the Central Valley Explosion as San Juan was able to go toe to toe with the talented team from the Valley.  The Spirits were able to breakthrough 10 minutes into the second half has K.T. Mersereau came flying in from her outside midfield position to put in a loose ball in the box and lead the team to victory.  The work of Lindsey Piwinski in the middle and Caitlyn “Tiny” Hoversten on the outside  helped keep the bigger Explosion off of the scoreboard.

While only needing a tie to advance, the Spirits wanted to put to rest the question of who really was best in the pool by defeating Dublin Tri-Valley.  The lone tally came with 10 minutes left as Kate Hurley’s corner kick settled nicely on the foot of Cayla Velander who put it in the top corner.  Goalkeeper Audriana Soto provided her usual solid play as she has now recorded seven consecutive shutouts as the Spirits seem to be peaking at just the right time.  Of course a shutout streak like that is a team effort as outside backs Erica Estes and Mackenzie Benstead along with stopper Madison Chambliss have formed a formidable wall for opponents.

The Spirits will take on the Castro Valley Green Machine in the round of  16 on February 7th in Morgan Hill.  Coach Mo Whitney has not been afraid to move players around the field, as late in the season she has found the right combinations in leading the Spirits to a 5-0-2 record in January.

GO SPIRITS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!GOOD LUCK IN THE SWEET 16!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(Posted 2/6/2009) Congratulations to the San Juan Teams' successes in State Cup tournaments.

The San Juan Spirits 97 Blue, coached by Curtis Holmes were named NorCal State Cup Gold Champions this past weekend with a 3-1 win over South Valley.  San Juan Spirits 97 Blue won Norcal State Cup Gold division this last weekend in Manteca.  The girls were down player and won with only one sub and our back up goalies.  The entire team met the challenge and played very well.  The team was tied 0-0 at half and South Valley United came out hard and scored quickly at the start of the second half.  But that just fired up San Juan, as San Juan came back to win 3-1 in their last game with coach Curtis Holmes.

The San Juan Spirits 98 Blue, coached by John DeMartini advancing to the NorCal State Cup Gold division Finals with a 2-1 win over Placer 98 Gold.

The San Juan Lightning 98 Blue, coached by Marcos Mercado Jr. advancing to the NorCal State Cup Super division Finals with a 4-1 win over MVLA.

The San Juan Spirits 96 Blue, coached by Zeca Neto advancing to the CYSA State Cup Semi-Finals with a 2-0 win over Central Marin.

The San Juan Spirits 96 White, coached by Mo Whitney advancing to the Round of 16 in the CYSA State Cup.

Chris Gancheff from the SJSC U-19 Championship win at the Las Vegas Mayor's International Cup
(Posted 2/23/2009)  First game was against a team from Mexico.  Mexico scored first on a questionable no call on an obvious off-side, leading 1-0 at half time.  San Juan came right back at the start of the half and scored 2 minutes in when Zach Ulrich passed a through ball to Chris Gaschen who beat the keeper 1 v 1.  10 minutes later Nic Ryan was pulled down in the box and Chris Gaschen drove home the PK upper left while the keeper dove right.  5 minutes later Nic Ryan sent a corner kick into the middle of the box where Chris one touched it to his right and placed it low, far post, 8 yards out.  With less than 3 minutes to play Adam Jahn received a through ball that he converted for a goal.

Second game against Las Vegas, 6:00 PM on Saturday.  Terrible, home town referring.  Vegas had 3 shots in the entire game, and converted two.  SJ dominated the first half but it was on a counter that Vegas scored first.  SJ had 3 "scrums" in the 6 yard box and, unfortunately, came away empty handed!!  Down 1-0 at half time.  10 minutes into the second half Adam Jahn found the equalizer on a Zach Ulrich pass.  With 7 minutes to go Ade Akinsanya was pulled down in the box.  Chris Gaschen converted the ensuing PK, same as against Mexico (upper left keeper went right).  With 2 minutes to play Vegas got a counter attack goal.  Thus ended day one.

Third Game against Colorado - 12:40 on Sunday.  This was day two and SJ had to win in order to move on.  The entire game was dominated by San Juan with so many missed opportunities.  More missed balls in the 6 yard box.  Crosses and corners were flying in to the box but were missed too ofter.  First goal came in the first half on a throw in by Chris Gaschen into the box that Christian Romero finished.  Up 1-0 at the half.  Second goal came on a corner kick from Chris Gaschen to Ade Akinsanya.  Third goal came with less than 2 minutes remaining on a heep pass from Max Brixey to Chris left of the goal, 7 yards out.  Chris took the ball towards the goal and fired it off of the keepers right leg into the near post corner for goal #3.  3-0 win.

4th game was the semi-finals against Impact Black from Utah.  6:00 PM on Sunday evening.  1:47 into the game SJ scored on a beautiful cross by defender Dan Reese to Tyler Garrison.  Dan attacked up the right hand side making a 35 yard cross to the middle of the box where it found the head of a jumping Tyler Garrison who, 14 yards out, headed the ball into the upper right, near post.  ESPN highlight material.  On the ensuing kick-off Chris Gaschen, plyaing outside right mid, stepped in front of his man to steal the ball at the half way line, than did a mazy run through 5 defenders going to his left and towards the middle.  Once inside the box the keeper committed so Chris faked right, the keeper went down, then went left and passed the ball to the back of the net with his left foot, right post.  2 minutes later Dan Reese and Tyler Garrison did it all over again - almost the same play.  Dan attackes up the right side, sends a 35-40 yard cross into the box, Tyler heads it in.  5 minutes into the game it's 3-0.  Chris moves up to forward as the SJ coaches substitute liberaly.  30 minutes into the first half Chris again steals the ball, dribbles one defender, gets in the box, the keeper commits, Chris fakes right, keeper goes down, Chris moves left and passes the ball to the back of the net with his left foot.  4-0 at half.  Second half has Chris, Adam, Jeff Strickland, etc., on the bench.  I left to go watch the two teams who were playing for the right to play us in the finals.  While I was gone Zach Ulrich, playing outside right, scored, and Cameron Matlock, playing up top, also scored.

Finals against the Turlock Torneados.  Again, SJ dominated play, providing most of the scoring opportunities.  Goal keeper for Turlock was good.  SJ's keeper probably didn't have more than 3 shots on goal.  SJ had a dozen.  First, and only goal, came 15 minutes in when Chris brought the ball up on the right wing and made a 35 yard cross to the waiting head of Adam Jahn who hammered the header home.  Only other true highlight was about 10 minutes from the end with Chris up top when he dribbed 3 defenders, faked the keeper out who went down but took Chris out.  Chris protested but ref said that the keeper blocked the ball at Chris and that Chris hit the ball out.  Not true, but that's how the game ended....

Lightning 94 Blue - SC del Sol Presidents Day Tourney Finalists
(Posted 3/4/2009) The San Juan Lightning 94 Blue were U-15 finalists at the SC Del Sol 2009 President’s Day Tournament in Phoenix, Arizona.

Undermanned due to illness and injury, the 94 Blue fought to draws with the Utah USA 94 Red and the FC Delco (ranked E. Pennsylvania #3), and defeated the Arizona FC 94 Hammers en route to facing the host SC del Sol (ranked Arizona #3) in the quarterfinals.  A tense battle decided by penalty kicks advanced San Juan to the semifinals versus an old nemesis, the De Anza Force SC 93 Blue (ranked NorCal #2 and nationally #10).   The Lightning held tough for the fifth game in three days with only two subs, and forced De Anza to another penalty kick shootout.  Again, this was won in exciting fashion by San Juan!  The Lightning left it all on the field in the semi and did not get past Sereno 94 White (ranked Arizona #1, nationally #12) in the final, two hours later.

Congratulations Lightning 94 Blue!

At the UCSD campus in La Jolla last weekend, the Lightning again emerged victorious from a group of 32 top teams, scoring 11 goals and surrendering 2 over the six games. The team of 11 high school juniors and 2 seniors features strikers A.J. Agha, Cole Alexander and Eduardo Quintero, and midfielders Kody Duff, Stephen Johnson, Harris Levin, A.J. Vogt and William Walker. The first line of defense is manned by Kyle Eszlinger, Austin Kinn, Tanner Roland and Tony Vega, and the net is minded by goalkeeper Tyler Kinn.

PLACER UNITED AND SAN JUAN SOCCER CLUBS JOIN FORCES TO ATTRACT U.S. SOCCER’S ELITE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

April 6, 2009 – The Placer United Soccer Club of Loomis and San Juan Soccer Club of Folsom today announced that they are jointly launching the California Development Academy (CDA) in the boys U14, U16 and U18 age groups for the 2009-2010 season.

The CDA will be part of the national U.S. Soccer Development Academy program, which is designed for the top soccer clubs and elite players from around the country.  Currently 78 clubs nationally participate in the Development Academy program and CDA will be one of only five Northern California programs.

“With Placer United and San Juan ranked in the top five soccer clubs in Northern California, it made sense for us to join forces if we are truly serious about developing players who will one day help the U.S. compete to win a World Cup,” said Nathan Williams, Placer United Executive Director of Coaching.

Along with the CDA, the other Northern California Development Academy teams are the Danville Mustangs, De Anza Force, Santa Cruz County Breakers and Clovis Odyssey.

The Academy interview and application process included visits from U.S. Soccer Federation national scouts, who analyzed each club’s structure, training facilities, coaching-staff qualifications and player abilities.

“As the only Development Academy program in the Sacramento region, we now are creating an environment that brings our elite players together,” said Bill Wiskel, San Juan Director of Coaching.  “We’re joining a very exclusive group of soccer clubs, and it’s exciting that we’ll be able to compete against the best in the country.”

“With the Academy program, the goal is to have players training more and playing less, which will help bring U.S. soccer in line with the rest of the world,” said Placer United’s Williams.

U.S. Soccer added only three Academy programs for the 2009-2010 season.  In addition to the CDA, Academy programs were awarded to Major League Soccer franchises the Houston Dynamos and Kansas City Wizards.

“We’re hoping that with cooperation from other soccer clubs in the area that we’ll be able to create one of the country’s top soccer academies,” said San Juan’s Wiskel. “We worked hard to get the Development Academy program to the Sacramento area so players wanting to compete at the highest level have that opportunity.”

College coaches from the top schools from around the country are endorsing the Academy program as an effective way to identify top players.

Elite Clubs National League (ECNL) Announcement

(Posted 5/1/2009)
MILWAUKEE, Wisc. - On Tuesday, April 28, 2009, the Elite Clubs National League ("ECNL") announced the inaugural member clubs for the 2009- 2010 season. The ECNL will kick-off its inaugural season at the Eclipse Select Challenge Cup August 14-16, 2009, in Chicago and will continue with year- long competition in conjunction with multiple national showcase events that culminates in the ECNL National Championship in Seattle in July 2010. In addition, the ECNL will provide a subsidized player identification program for players to be scouted for youth national teams in conjunction with US Club Soccer's id2 Program.

In 2009-2010, the ECNL season will feature 40 of the top youth girls clubs in the United States in the U15-U17 age groups competing in a 12-game season. Teams in the ECNL will compete for individual age group ECNL National Championships and an overall ECNL Club National Championship.

In each age group, teams will be placed in two flights of 20 teams each, (Challenge A and Challenge B), based on team strength. The ECNL will host stand- alone events and partner with existing national showcase events for completion of a 10-game regular season. Upon completion of a 10-game regular season, multiple four team playoff groups in each flight will be established based on the regular season standings. The top four teams in each age group in the Challenge A division will compete for the ECNL National Championship and the winner will be crowned the age group ECNL National Champion. The bottom four teams in the Challenge A division will compete in a relegation playoff where the winning team will remain in the Challenge A division for the next season and the remaining three teams will be relegated to the Challenge B division. The top four teams in the Challenge B division will compete for the promotion playoff where the top three teams will be promoted to the Challenge A division for the next season.

"The ECNL is a great step for elite girls youth players in this country," said ECNL President Christian Lavers (FC Milwaukee). "The ECNL is founded on the concept that elite female player development in the United States needs a structure that will reduce the total number of games on the schedule and increase the number of meaningful, quality games. The ECNL sets forth a vision that gives us a clear path to that goal -a national competition schedule and a national identification program linked to that competition."

"A great deal of work has gone into making the ECNL a reality. That, coupled with the commitment of the clubs involved, provides very exciting prospects for us all moving forward. This league is going to be something very special," said ECNL Vice President, Doug Bracken (Ohio Elite Soccer Academy).

2009-2010 ECNL clubs include some of the most accomplished girls youth clubs in the United States: Albertson Fury, New York; Arsenal FC, California; Atlanta Fire, Georgia; Bethesda SC, Maryland; Birmingham United, Alabama; CASL, North Carolina; CESA Premier, South Carolina; Challenge SC, Texas; Charlotte Soccer Academy, North Carolina; Colorado Rush, Colorado; Concorde Fire, Georgia; Connecticut FC, Connecticut; Crossfire Premier, Washington; Dallas Sting, Texas; D'Feeters, Texas; Eclipse Select, Illinois; FC Dallas, Texas; FC DELCO, Pennsylvania; FC Milwaukee, Wisconsin; FC Stars of Mass, Massachusetts; FC Virginia, Virginia; Freestate Soccer Alliance, Maryland; FSA SoccerPlus, Connecticut; Irvine Strikers, California; Lonestar SC, Texas; Minnesota Thunder, Minnesota; Mustang SC, California; Neusport FC, Nevada; Ohio Elite Soccer Academy, Ohio; Ohio Premier, Ohio; PDA, New Jersey; Pleasanton Rage, California; Real Colorado, Colorado; San Juan SC, California; SC Del Sol, Arizona; Sereno SC, Arizona; Solar, Texas; St. Louis Scott Gallagher, Missouri; Virginia Rush, Virginia; West Coast FC, California.

The ECNL is incorporated as a not-for-profit organization and will apply for 501(c)(3) status. The ECNL is operated and managed by a Board of Directors elected by the member clubs. The member clubs will also vote on admission of new clubs, the competitive format of the league, and all league rules and policies.

 US Club Sanctions ECNL
US Club SoccerHARLESTON, S.C. (May 7, 2009) - US Club Soccer has announced a sanctioning agreement with the newly-formed Elite Clubs National League (ECNL), the premier girls' league in the country with U- 15, U-16 and U-17 divisions.

The 40 inaugural ECNL member clubs were recently announced for the 2009-10 season, which will kick off with the Eclipse Select Challenge Cup in Chicago, August 14-16. "We're looking forward to being involved in this league with what are clearly some of the top girls' soccer clubs in the country," said US Club Soccer Executive Director Bill Sage. "This is an exciting venture and one that promises to help define the future direction of elite girls' soccer in the United States."
US Club Soccer will assist in the league's administration and event operations, including marketing and public relations. In addition to the ECNL being integrally involved in US Club Soccer's current id2 player identification and development program, future plans include the league's involvement in an older girls' identification and development program as well.

The league's structure and national scope will allow for optimal development for the elite female player, in part by improving clubs' competitive calendars while allowing clubs the ability to provide a better training-to-game ratio for their players.  "We are very excited to enter into this relationship with US Club Soccer," said ECNL President Christian Lavers. "Both the ECNL and US Club Soccer are committed to improving the developmental environment for youth players in the United States, and together I think we will be able to do this more quickly, more effectively and with a number of new and unique programs."  ECNL member clubs will place one team in each of the U-15, U-16 and U-17 age groups, and teams will compete for individual age group championships as well as an overall club national championship.  The ECNL will host stand-alone events and partner with existing national showcase events for the completion of a 10-game regular season prior to the year-end ECNL National Championship. The inaugural ECNL National Championship is slated for July 2010 in Seattle.

Each ECNL team must participate in three of five regular-season events:
- Eclipse Select Challenge Cup: Aug. 14-16, 2009, in Chicago
- NCAA Women's College Cup: Dec. 4-6, 2009, in College Station, Texas
- Disney's Soccer Showcase: Dec. 31, 2009-Jan. 3, 2010, in Orlando, Fla.
- Las Vegas Showcase: March 2010
- PDA Showcase: May 2010 in Zaraphath, N.J.

Each age group will be split into two flights (Challenge A and Challenge B) based on team strength, and games within each flight will be based on geographical location in order to minimize the number of games teams play against opponents from the same region.
Upon completion of the regular season, multiple four-team playoff groups will be established in each flight based on the regular-season standings. The top four teams in each age group in the Challenge A flight will compete for the ECNL National Championship. The bottom four teams in the Challenge A flight will compete in a relegation playoff in which the winning team will remain in the Challenge A division for the next season and the remaining three teams will be relegated to the Challenge B flight. Similarly, the top four teams in the Challenge B division will compete for the promotion playoff in which the top three teams will be promoted to the Challenge A flight in the next season.

Spirits 95 Bue Compete at Manchester United Cup at Nike HQ

San Juan Spirits 95 Girls Compete with the Best at Nike’s Manchester United Premier Cup at Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon

The ladies of the San Juan Spirits 95 made a great showing at the Manchester United Premier Cup at the spectacular Nike World Headquarters over the Memorial Day weekend.  Billed as the “the most competitive U14/15 tournament in the World”, the best teams from across the country were invited to compete under cloudless blue skies, perfect temperatures, and putting green grass.  The Spirits 95 played fast and fierce and ended the tourney with a respectable 3 wins, 1 tie and 2 losses against great teams from across the country.

The unusual playing format, 20 minutes halves, rosters limited to 15 and no free substituting, made for fast and relentless play throughout the weekend.  Day One started well, with the Spirits topping Bethesda SC Freedom from Maryland 1-0 on a corner kick flawlessly bent into the far corner by Ashlee Hanson.  In Game 2, despite several shots on goal and game long domination, the Spirits tied Crossfire of Washington 0-0.  Notably, Crossfire never gave up a goal all weekend.   The Spirits played evenly against the ultimate finalists Slammers from Newport Beach, but gave up one goal on a deflection off a corner kick, falling 0-1.  Later the same day, the Spirits fell 0-2 to Legends FC, also from southern California.  Day Three saw a rebound, with the Spirits scoring two goals against FC Delco of Pennsylvania in the morning and in the furious afternoon game on the Bo Jackson field, besting PDA Celtic of New Jersey 1-0 on a spectacular free kick by Mackenzie Moreno.

In between matches, the players enjoyed watching other great matches, all of which were exciting and pitched battles.  In addition, the players indulged in food and games in the Nike sponsored Player’s Lounge as well as a party and shopping, complete with a DJ, at the Nike Store on the Nike Corporate Campus.  The officiating, performed by referees from Major League Soccer, was certainly the best ever enjoyed by all the players.  Congrats to Real So Cal for beating Slammers in PK’s and winning an all expense paid trip to Gothia Cup in Sweden in July 09.  We fully expect Real So Cal to bring home the Gothia Cup.

MILWAUKEE, Wisc. (June 12, 2009) - The regular-season schedule for the inaugural season of the Elite Clubs National League (ECNL) was released today. The ECNL features 40 of the top girls' soccer clubs throughout the country competing in multiple divisions for the ECNL National Championship, the ECNL Club National Championship, and promotion and relegation between the divisions.

The 2009-2010 ECNL season features two divisions of 20 teams each (Challenge A and Challenge B). Each team will play nine regular season games within their division for placement going into the ECNL National Championship in July 2010 in Seattle, Wash. The ECNL regular season will feature a total of 270 games in each division, for a total of 540 games throughout the year-long competition.

"Looking at the list of games that will be played this year is tremendously exciting," said ECNL President Christian Lavers. "Every game will count in determining the league standings, and accordingly every game should be meaningful and significantly more competitive than most of the games played in the past by these players. The number of top players involved in the ECNL will make this one of the most exciting competitions in the United States."

The 2009-2010 ECNL regular-season games are spread out over five events: (1) the Eclipse Invitational in August 2009; (2) the Final Four Showcase in December 2009; (3) the Disney Soccer Showcase presented by Chelsea FC in December 2009; (4) the Las Vegas College Showcase in March 2010; and (5) the PDA College Showcase in May 2010.

The events were selected to provide a league schedule that continued over the course of an entire year, to accommodate high school soccer seasons throughout the country, and to provide each club with flexibility to choose the best schedule for their needs. At the conclusion of the regular season, all ECNL teams will be placed into playoff groups at the ECNL National Championship.

"The ECNL National Championship will be one of the best-ever youth soccer events for females in the United States," said ECNL Vice President Doug Bracken. "Bringing together over 2,000 of the best female soccer players in the United States into one event where so much is up for grabs will create an environment that is second to none."

At the conclusion of the ECNL National Championship, an ECNL national champion will be crowned in each age group, an overall ECNL club champion will be crowned, and three teams from the Challenge B division will gain promotion to the Challenge A division for the 2010-11 season.

The ECNL is sanctioned by US Club Soccer, which will assist in the league's administration and event operations, including marketing and public relations.

Spirits 91 White answer questions for college bound players
(Posted: Oct. 3, 2008)
Wow, I could go to school here?

Did you know this school is smaller than my High  School?
This place is beautiful!
Did you know that most students at private colleges get some form of scholarship?  The girl to guy ratio at Cal Poly – Pomona is 54% men and 46% women?  UCSB has two levels of women’s soccer?  Only one is the school’s traveling team but other Club Team which is less intense, structured and commitment.  These were some of the comments heard after visiting numerous colleges throughout Central and Southern California.  The Spirits 91 White (U-18) recently answered a lot of questions for college bound players.
These were some of the questions our girls found answers to after just a couple days on the road toward the Slammers Tournament in Irvine.  Our team left Sac early on a Tuesday and headed out to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, we did a self guided tour of the campus and then off to University Santa Barbara.  Former San Juan player Christina Freitas and her boyfriend gave us a walking tour of the UCSB campus and excellent insight to campus life.  Then it was off to USC, Cal Poly – Pomona, UC Riverside, and University of La Verne, Cal State – Fullerton, Chapman University and Cal State Long Beach over the next couple days.
Our Coach Rick Carrigan was diligent on getting in touch with the coach’s at the colleges and some of them were available to come out to either talk to our girls or have their assistant lead a tour of the campus. These were the most fruitful visits getting the coach’s perspective of what it will take to play college ball, the demands, practice times, training schedules and campus life.
The trip was intended to provide our players with a broad range of exposures to schools, what it takes to get into college and a perspective of what will be expected if they plan to play college ball.

We want to thank our coach, Rick Carrigan, chaperone Sharon Cullen, Team Manager Pat Cullen and last but defiantly not least the parents who made this trip possible by financing this adventure. Details from the trip along with hot links to the schools, NCAA and other key information will soon be available on the Club web site
.

Spirits '95 Blue - Blues Cup Finalist!

(Posted: Sept. 5, 2008)
Game 1 v. Surf White:
Atough, well matched battle on hot artificial turf ended in a 0-1 loss toSurf.  San Juan losses its guest goaliefrom Placer after our first game due to injury, Maddy Walsh moved from wing midto goal for game 2.

Game 2v. Sereno Arizona :  San Juan holds Sereno to 0-0 tie. San Juanloses Taylor Landuk, attackingmid, leaves game at end due to illness.

Game 3v. Valley United Stars:    San Juan loses another player, Cheyenne Maxwell, who’s been up allnight with the stomach flu.  Paige Harrison moves to defending mid and proceeds to own theplace.  Valley scores first on a free kick, San Juan evens it with 10minutes left with a beautiful header by defender Bailey Gary off a corner kick, but goes down a point with a red card (to compliment its 7 yellow cards) issuedon a questionable call.  San Juan must win to advance.  Bianca Reveles passes to Mariah Powers who beats thedefender and, with the goalie charging, chips the ball over the goalie and intothe net for the win.

Quarterfinal v. Blues Kale:    San Juan has no healthy subs due to redcard suspension; Taylor and Cheyenne rally enough to cycle in for 2-5 minute stints, allowing short respites for the relentless and outstanding work of Mackenzie Moreno, Julian Holley, Desarae Lewis and Paige.  Again, San Juan passes from the outside midto Bianca whodraws the defenders then passes it to Mariah who turns, shoots and scores.  San Juanpulls off the 1-0 win over Blues Kale.

Semifinal v. Bay Oaks:   San Juan with 1 healthy sub plus thestill ailing Cheyenne and Taylor scores on Bay Oaks in the first five minutes on agoal by Mariah. Bay Oaks evens it with an exquisite corner.  In the second half, Julian Holley runs down animpossible to catch ball and draws the corner kick then proceeds to score off thecorner in a scrum in front of the goalie.  We win 2-1 but lose Mariah, our national pool forward ona nasty foul with ten minutes to go.

Final v. Blues Rennie (Far West RegionalChampions):  San Juan with zero healthy subs, butagain, Cheyenne and Taylor rallyto play.  Defenders Casi Lynch, Amanda Stickleman, Tiffani Reimers and Bailey Gary continuetheir outstanding, uninterrupted three day effort.  It is 0-0 at half, buta hard, line drive from the outside puts Blues up by 1 and score again withmoments remaining an exquisite header and win 2-0.

Thistournament reminded the Spirits of 95 that perseverance, effort and team playpermits triumph in the face of adversity.  It also illustrated why youaren’t supposed to chat with the refs during the game.
Awesome job gals!

Lighting 92 Blue Win San Diego Surf Cup 2008
Posted: Sept. 3, 2008)  The San Juan Lightning 92 Blue boys' team traveled to San Diego for the prestigious Surf Cup Aug 2-4. The U17 boys were well prepared by Coach Billy Wiskel for this tournament which included top teams and college coaches from throughout the country. The boys began Gold Group play early Saturday morning and battled the Canadian Kitchener Spirit to a 1-1 draw. The Lightning returned to the pitch for an evening game against SC Bayern. The Lightning scored early and often in the 6-2 victory.
Sunday began a string of rematches for the Lightning. The team first met a tough Albion SC team which had eliminated the Lightning from the Cerritos Memorial Day Challenge. The Lightning created several opportunities throughout the contest until linking together three volleys which resulted in the match's only goal. The Lightning's stingy defenders stymied a very busy Albion squad until the final whistle signaled a 1-0 Lightning win.
In the Monday morning semifinal, the Lightning played FC San Diego. The Lightning struck quickly to a 2-0 halftime lead and emerged victorious 2-1. In the afternoon game, Albion struggled to prevent Lightning strikes throughout the scoreless first half. The Lightning calmly maintained its possession game until able to fire in a rebound early in the second half.Throughout the weekend, the Lightning won bitter battles for midfield control with Ruben, Stephen, Harris and Will maintaining possession and preventing runs through the middle. Forcing play to the outside allowed Kody and both AJs to push play forward to strikers Cole, Chris and Austin who applied consistent pressure from their forward positions. Again proving that defense wins championships, Lightning defenders Tony, Austin, Tanner, Eddie and both Kyles allowed keepers Tyler and Teddy to make only a few necessary saves against extremely explosive opposition. Congratulations Lightning. We look forward to seeing you in your Surf Cup 2008 Champions sweatshirts.

San Juan Spirits 93 White Win Huntington Beach Classic!

(Posted 8/10/2008)  Congratulations to the Spirits, Coach Jimmy Frazelle and the parents.

After going undefeated in three competitive tournament games, the Spirits 93 White advanced to the Championship game against the Mission Viejo United.  The game was intense from beginning to end! The game ended in a tie of 1 - 1 after the play clock ran out, leading the girls into overtime.  After a 10 minute overtime with no additional goals scored, the girls advanced to penalty kicks.  The Spirit’s goalie, Katie Leis was spectacular at stopping the United’s attempts at goal.  The Spirit’s attempts at goal proved successful leading them to victory with the final score of Spirits 93 White - 4, Mission Viejo United - 3.

Lets all congratulate the Spirits 93 White and Coach Jimmy Frazelle for a job well done.  This is a great representation for our club and their team.

San Juan Spirits 91 Blue place second place at Surf Cup
(Posted 8/10/2008) In what was their most demanding tournament in front of hundreds of college scouts, the Spirits of 91 went all the way to the final game before loosing in overtime to Leahi SC from Hawaii.

During preliminary play, the team tied the ISC strikers (SC) 1-1, beat the TSF Academy Gunners 3-1, and beat the Crossfire Premier 1-0 from Washington State. In the Semi Finals, the Spirits played the OJSC Strikers (SC) which ended up in a very hard fought 2-1 win.  Next up was the finals, where the team played the Leahi SC U19 team from Hawaii. The game was a very evenly played and ended up in regulation tied at 1-1.  Unfortunately in golden goal overtime, the Leahi team was able to score for a 2-1 victory.

During the awards ceremony, however, the Leahi coach stated she had never played against a classier, better coached team!  Even though it wasn’t the result the girls wanted, they should be very pleased with the way they played during the entire tournament!

GAME-4 (7/26/2008) FINAL GAME:  San Juan vs. FC Stars of Massachusetts:
San Juan Spirits 94 Blue prevail 2-0 over FC Stars of Massachusetts in the Finals of the 2008 US Youth Soccer National Championships in North Little Rock , AR.

The 94’s finally scored a goal in the 1st Half, and then quickly followed up with a second 1st Half goal. That’s usually all it takes for this amazing group.  It’s said the defense wins championships, and in four games at the National Championships, the 94’s served up four consecutive shutouts!

GAME-3 (7/25/2008):  San Juan vs. Toro Bravo of Nebraska:
The ARYSL San Juan Spirits 94 Blue advance to US Youth Soccer U-14 Girls National Championship game. In the third and final game of preliminary play, the Spirits 94 Blue advance to National Championship game by defeating Toro Bravo of Nebraska 1-0. As predicted in yesterday’s update, the game was incredibly intense and physical as Toro Bravo knew it had a great chance of advancing with a win, and they played like it. Similar to the first two games, it was 0-0 at Half. The Spirits were finally able to score about midway through the 2nd Half, this time with a 30-yard laser that found the top right corner of the net.

During the preliminary round of the National Championships, the Spirits 94 Blue tallied 2 wins and a tie, with three shutouts. This is quite an accomplishment already against the Regional Champions from the The 94’s epic 2007/08 season, which began in March 2007 with a championship at the Las Vegas College Showcase, will conclude with the National Championship game scheduled at 6:45pm Saturday evening in North Little Rock. It will be a rematch of the 2nd Round game against the FC Stars of Massachusetts where the Spirits and the Stars tied 0-0.

San Juan Spirits 91 Blue win in Portland
(Posted 7/21/2008)The San Juan Spirits of 91 won the Portland Cup.  The team started off by playing the home team, FC Portland Royal with a final score of 2-1.  Next up, the girls played the Lake Oswego Havoc, the Oregon State Champions.  This was a very physical, hard fought game that ended in a 1-1 tie.  The next game the girls won against Tualitin Hills Silver with a score of 2-1.  With that win, it put the team into the finals against the same Los Oswego team that we had tied 1-1 in the preliminaries.  This time, the girls were very motivated for a different result, and ended up on top with a score of 4-1 to take the championship!

Lightning '97 Blue Win Big @ Rouge Cup in Oregon

(Posted: June 17, 2008)  The San Juan Lightning ’97 Blue team opened their tournament season with a convincing win in the Rogue Valley Cup in Medford, Oregon, over the Memorial Day weekend.  The team swept all five games by a combined score of 23-5, featuring a balanced attack in which eight players scored goals.  Luis Chavez and Jesse Hopp paced the scoring with seven and six goals respectively.  DJ Villegas scored four, Noah Phillips had two, and Omar Rivera, Dylan Klein, Patrick Moher and Erick Ortiz each had one goal.  Six players had at least one assist, including Hopp (4), Rivera (3), Chavez, Javier Nieves, Justin Long and Emmett Barnes (1 each).

San Juan’s defense was also very strong.  Jared Heffner, Brenton Hack, Owen Brower-Douglas, Barnes, Long and Ortiz anchored a back line that was rarely beaten.  Keeper Nieves was strong throughout, as was backup keeper Klein.  The midfield was dominated Moher, Rivera, Klein, Long, Phillips and Chavez, while Hopp, Villegas, Zachary Dedrick kept constant pressure up front.  With half of its players new to the San Juan Club, the tournament was a great opportunity for the team to work on their passing, positioning and communication.    G o    L i g h t n i n g ! !

Lightning 94 White - Win Tracy FC Orange Bowl on 5/24
(Posted May 31 2008) On May 23rd and 24th, the San Juan U14 Boys Lightning White inaugurated their 2008 season with championship hardware at the Inaugural Tracy Futbol FC “Orange Bowl.”  The Memorial Day weekend was played on some of the finest grass fields in the state.

Championship:  Santa Rosa vs. SJL94W - 0:2
The championship game turned out to be San Juan’s best passing game of the tournament.  Although San Juan peppered Santa Rosa’s goal, it appeared that the championship might be decided by PKs.  With 7 minutes left, Austin Wiberg found Keith Scott with a nice lead pass 20 yards out to the right of the goal.  Scott brought the ball under control and enticed the keeper to commit; he popped it over the keeper and into the left side netting to separate San Juan from Santa Rosa by a goal.  Santa Rosa tried valiantly to tie the game.  Leo Luna blocked a fierce Santa Rosa shot.  With the ball bouncing just 2 yds from the goal, Alex Lettington saved the day by beating a Santa Rosa attacker to clear the ball up the field.  After several more close opportunities by San Juan, Wiberg put in the game closer with 1 minute left.  San Juan had 14 shots on goal to Santa Rosa’s 2.  Overall, a tremendous job by the defense - permitting just 12 shots and 1 goal in 4 games.  Shoring up the defense were Leo Luna, Alex Lettington, Daniel Manfred, Christian Ramirez, and Connor Galvin (guest).

More game details coming in the upcoming June Club Newsletter.

There is Wright, firing shots into an empty net, over and over again. There is Wright, juggling the ball, maneuvering it on the grass, developing his touch. Wright, a University of New Mexico striker, has always worked hard on his game. The truth is..."

Former SJSC Player Finally Gets the Nod With the LA Galaxy
Posted (Feb. 21, 2008 ) From Soccer America
L.A. Places Faith in Untested Cronin  Los Angeles Times
Given the Los Angeles Galaxy's lofty goals for next season, "it seems a huge risk" to make a starter out of a goalkeeper who's played only six Major League Soccer games in three total seasons, says the L.A. Times' Grahame L. Jones. But that's exactly what Ruud Gullit and Co., intend to do with 24-year-old Steve Cronin. Indeed, Joe Cannon, traded to San Jose to free up cap room, is now but a distant memory, leaving Cronin as the senior guy ahead of three rookie backups.

"If you never give a young keeper the chance, then he will never become a good goalkeeper," L.A. coach Gullit said. "I have to give the goalkeeper a chance ... the possibility to make mistakes. Of course, I don't want him to make mistakes, but at least there's no pressure on him and he has to learn from that."

It goes without saying that Cronin, who was named goalkeeper of the tournament at the FIFA U-20 World Championship in 2003, has a lot to prove. Good thing he's confident: "I feel like this is definitely my team and I'm ready to go," he said. "Now I'm going to get the games and I have to do well in every one of them." The proving begins Wednesday night against Gamba Osaka in the Pan-Pacific Championship

Former Spirits of '88 Liz Harkin have been named Student-Athlete of the Month

Elizabeth Harkin of the women's soccer team and Steve Jones of the men's basketball team have been named Student-Athletes of the Month, the Office of Student-Athlete Development announced Monday.

Harkin, a sophomore pre-health/biology major, currently has a 4.0 GPA and is a member of the Barrett Honors College.

She was selected as a Scholar Baller captain for the soccer team this semester, as she provided leadership to her team in character, accountability and responsibility throughout the season.

In November, CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) selected Harkin to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District VIII second team.

She balanced her academics with her responsibilities on the field, managing the team's busy travel schedule this fall by taking exams on the road while playing in all 19 of the team's matches this season.

In addition, Harkin is a frequent volunteer for a local animal shelter and rescue center.

"Liz displays the same tenacity and dedication in the classroom as she does on the soccer field," ASU biology professor Stanley Faeth said. "She is excelling in both the lecture and laboratory in BIO 187 and is able to effectively juggle the rigorous demands of academia and sports."
