San Juan Soccer "Spooktacular" in Capturing Boo-Fest Crown
(Posted 11/1/2009) The San Juan Lightning 2000 White under-10 boys soccer team defeated America USA Youth Soccer Club 1-0 to take first place at the October 24-25 "Boo-Fest" soccer tournament hosted by Sacramento United. San Juan reached the championship game by defeating Novato United 2-1 and SF Freedom 9-0 in the preliminary round. A 1-1 tie with Manteca Boca in the third round was sufficient to vault the team into the championship game. The final game was an intense, back and forth match that reflected the rivalry that is emerging between these two talented teams. San Juan scored a goal midway through the second half to capture the title in the top and most competitive bracket of the tournament.
Sacramento United’s "Boo-Fest" is one of the largest youth soccer tournaments in the region. Nearly 175 U9-U11 teams from Northern California and Nevada participated in this two-day event. Up next for San Juan is a match against Cal Rush Nike 00 on Saturday, October 31 at Mitchell Middle School in Rancho Cordova. Game time is set for 10:30am.

Spirits 95 Blue - Finalists at Mustang Stampede 2009 !
(Posted 8/15/2009) The 95 San Juan Spirits Blue came up one goal short in double overtime in the exciting Championship match of the U-15 Girls bracket in the Mustang Stampede on Sunday, August 9, 2009. The Championship match was the Spirits 95 sixth game in three days, all on turf fields, under blistering temperatures that reached 115 degrees on the field, against the reigning National Champions Mustang Blast. Playing with grit and determination, the Spirits attacked the Blast at every chance, almost putting one away the Golden Goal in the first overtime but for a miraculous save by the Blast goalie. The sole Blast goal came in the last 30 seconds of the 2nd overtime, from a rebound off a corner kick that went high and slotted into the upper far post net. The Spirits defense was solid and creative all tournament long, the midfielders played aggressively, launching attack after attack and the forwards pounded the Blast defenders coming close to scoring several times. When the final whistle blew, our girls knew they had done their best and done everyone proud. The Spirits 95 successful road to the Final saw them tie the So. Cal. team West Coast FC 1-1, tie CV Chilipeppers 0-0, dominate Lamorinda 3-0, top the Columbia Timbers from Vancouver, Washington in the quarterfinal match 1-0, and top another So. Cal. team, Tustin FC Red, 1-0 in the semi-final.It was a great three days of competitive soccer against an array of top-notch teams. Congratulations 95 Spirits of Blue for a great job!

Spirits 96 White - Santa Cruz Breakers Cup Champions!
(Posted 8/8/2009) After losing in the finals in 2008, the Spirits of 96 White took the next step and captured the 2009 Santa Cruz Breakers Cup on August 1st & 2nd. This capped off the second visit in six weeks to the beach city as the Spirits also participated in the Beach Tournament on June 20th & 21st. The beach tournament was a unique experience for the girls as they split into two teams and played in the sand. The two teams met each other in the semifinals and the winner of that match ended up losing in the finals. This was a great tournament for the girls as it prepared them for their upcoming tournaments as the sand game helps with their conditioning and technical skills.
The first game of the Breakers Cup was mostly a rumor to those in attendance as a thick layer of fog engulfed the field and made it impossible to see from goal line to goal line and sideline to sideline. According to reliable sources the Spirits defeated Elk Grove 1-0 on a goal by Smiley Mendez about five minutes into the match. The defense led by Erica Estes and Lindsey Piwinski made the lead standup.
After losing to the host team 2-0 in their second game, the Spirits knew they had to max out points against the SASC Sparks and get some help in order to advance to either the consolation or championship game. Knowing they had to score at least three goals to advance the Spirits put on relentless pressure from the start. Led by the controlling midfield play of Marisa Rios and Katie Neighbor and Melisa Linenberger on the outside the Spirits were in attack mode. They finally broke through at the 20 minute mark as Cayla Velander headed in a corner kick for a 1-0 lead. After scoring a second goal before the end of the first half the Spirits knew they had to get one more. Morgan Kimball’s aggressive play on the outside helped keep the attack on the Sparks and the Spirits finally broke through with their third goal as Gabby Chelini poked the ball in from point blank range off of a hard shot from Kristin Perkins to give the Spirits their eventual 3-0 win. Natalie Silcox kept the Sparks scoreless with some stellar second half goalkeeping.
After all the other results were in, the Spirits somehow found themselves in the championship game against their rivals from the Sacramento area, Boca Jr’s. The first half of the championship game belonged to Kate Hurley as she scored two goals about five minutes apart. Both goals were from about the same spot on the field about 35 yards out as both shots were perfectly placed into the corner of the net. The Spirits knew the second half would be a battle as Boca was not about to quit. Jalyn Gonsalves and Kayla Wright Ciccarelli made some nice runs to keep Boca honest and on their heels. Nikki Clark’s physical play in the middle and Mackenzie Benstead’s physical play in the back continually frustrated Boca as the Spirits held on for a 2-1 win. Maddie Chambliss went the distance in goal coming up with some nice plays to help the Spirits of 96 White win their first tournament title.
The Spirits are looking forward to their next tournament August 29th & 30th in Huntington Beach as the aim for back to back titles.
